Building a Business Case for Migration
GCS facilitates building a clear and compelling migration business case for your organization’s leadership. GCS provides economic analysis using AWS Total Cost of Ownership (COT) calculator, Microsoft Azure pricing calculator, and Esri licensing cost information. GCS focuses on “Right Sizing” or matching the instance types and sizes to your workload performance and capacity requirements at the lowest possible cost.
Migration Readiness and Planning
GCS develops Migration Readiness Assessments to determine level of commitment, competence, and capability needed to successfully move to the cloud. Using industry standard frameworks, such as the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework (AWS CAF), GCS determines your cloud migration readiness. Cloud migration frameworks provide ways of looking at your environment through different lenses to make sure all areas of your business are addressed, not just GIS. Being ready for a large migration initiative requires preparation across several key areas.
Part of assessing readiness is determining the best migration strategy. The simplest strategy involves a “lift and shift” of your existing applications and data without changes to platform, which is the least amount of effort, time, and cost. But, you may consider a re-factor or re-architect approach, whereby geospatial business applications are architected and developed using cloud native features. This is driven by a strong business need to add features, scale, or performance that would otherwise be difficult to achieve in the application’s existing environment. GCS evaluates each standard migration strategy based on your business and IT objectives so that pros/cons may be weighted.
Once a structure for developing an efficient and effective plan for organizations to successfully move to the cloud has been determined, GCS implements the migration. In some cases, a small Proof of Concept may be deployed to assess your on-premise systems against a re-hosted cloud system. ArcGIS Enterprise on Amazon Web Services (AWS)
Esri migration with AWS cloud-native features
GCS uses Esri built AWS cloud-native features to assist with ArcGIS migrations. The ArcGIS Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) help deploy components of ArcGIS Enterprise on AWS. Using ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder for AWS, GCS implements Esri best practices for deployments on AWS.
AWS CloudFormation and ArcGIS
For more complex cloud architectures, GCS uses Esri’s AWS CloudFormation templates for ArcGIS. ArcGIS AWS CloudFormation templates facilitate the creation of complex architectures for high availability, disaster recovery, and GeoEvent Server. These architectures take advantage of AWS cloud-native features such storing the ArcGIS Server configuration store in AWS DynamoDB or S3 for high availability scenarios.
Following Esri best practices, This allows for the following deployments:
- A single machine ArcGIS Enterprise deployment
- A highly available ArcGIS Enterprise deployment
- ArcGIS Enterprise deployments in two different regions for disaster recovery purposes
- A highly available ArcGIS Server site
- A single-machine ArcGIS GeoEvent Server site
- A highly available, single-machine ArcGIS Server site
ArcGIS Enterprise on Microsoft Azure
ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder for Microsoft Azure creates ArcGIS Enterprise deployments that use a single Azure Application Gateway to access the portal and all federated servers. This is referred to as a version 2 (V2) deployment type. Deployments you create using ArcGIS Enterprise Cloud Builder for Microsoft Azure 10.8 onward are considered V2 deployments or sites.
Esri VMs fom Microsoft Azure Marketplace
GCS utilizes Esri virtual machine (VM) images from the Microsoft Azure Marketplace. These VMs insure Esri best practices are followed with regard to base configurations. ArcGIS Enterprise VMs contains Portal for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Data Store, and ArcGIS Notebook Server on Microsoft Windows Server 2019 operating system. ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Pro VMs are available as well.
