Enterprise GIS Needs Assessment for Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry

Overview

Since 1963, Webber has been a leader in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry with specialties in heavy civil and waterworks.

Webber engaged with GCS for an Enterprise GIS Needs Assessment to better understand challenges and recommended approached to resolve challenges related to their Enterprise ArcGIS system. GCS met with Webber’s business and technical teams to review the existing workflows, architecture, and provide recommendations based on Esri best practices.

Scope of Work

The scope of work for the Enterprise GIS Needs Assessment for Webber, a construction company, involved a comprehensive evaluation of the organization’s geospatial requirements, existing infrastructure, and operational workflows. The assessment aimed to identify how modifications to Esri ArcGIS Enterprise will resolve Webber’s bottlenecks and challenges related to business workflows for project planning, site analysis, and construction management processes. The team initiated the project by conducting stakeholder interviews to gather insights on current challenges, desired functionalities, and specific use cases related to GIS technology within the organization.

Project Implementation

Following the stakeholder engagement, the team performed a thorough analysis of Webber’s existing GIS systems and data management practices. This involved evaluating the quality and accessibility of current geospatial data, integration with other software tools, and the overall technical infrastructure in place. The team assessed the current workflows and identified gaps where ArcGIS Enterprise could provide improved efficiencies, such as in data visualization, collaboration among teams, and real-time project monitoring.

The focus of the meetings included:

  1. Review of Esri system architecture and applications
  2. Identify primary GIS business and technical workflows
  3. Review top challenges
  4. Discuss system and applications enhancements

Subsequently, the team developed a tailored implementation strategy that outlined key recommendations for adopting Esri ArcGIS Enterprise best practices to resolve operational challenges. The assessment concluded with a detailed GIS Needs Assessment report that summarized findings, outlined actionable steps, and provided a framework for Webber to leverage ArcGIS technology effectively in future construction projects. This comprehensive evaluation empowered Webber to make informed decisions about their GIS capabilities, ultimately enhancing operational efficiency and project outcomes.

As a final deliverable for this engagement, GCS provided a GIS Needs Assessment document. This documents summarized the structure and aim of Webber’s Enterprise GIS architecture and issues affecting performance while aligning with Esri best practices. GCS recommended enhancements to workflows and structure to better unlock GIS capabilities at Webber.
