COMPASS, Online Cultural Resource and Paleontological Database, for History Colorado, Department of Higher Education

Overview

Established in 1979, History Colorado is a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization and an agency of the State of Colorado under the Department of Higher Education that offers access to Colorado’s history through cultural and heritage resources for students and teachers making a positive impact on preschoolers, students in grades K-12, and those in higher education. They provide programs and services related to historic preservation and archaeology as well as access to a vast collection of archives, artifacts, and historical photography.

About COMPASS

The (now Legacy) Compass database was first launched in the early 2000s, and served as the initial online cultural resource database administered by the Colorado Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (OAHP). In 2022, OAHP received generous financial support from the Office of Information Technology (OIT) to build an entirely new Compass platform, as the needs of History Colorado’s constituents outgrew the capacity for the original system build. OAHP partnered with GCS to build a modern GIS to better meet the growing needs of constituents. This redesigned system has increased search capabilities with the fields available in the main OAHP database, as well as integration with Colorado’s Enterprise GIS database, so that updates can more seamlessly be pushed through into the data available to Compass users.

Technology

GCS offered consulting services to the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation to create a tailored portal for external users. This portal, built on Esri ArcGIS technology, seamlessly integrates spatial and non-spatial search functions and data visualization into a single interface. Through our efforts, we developed an integrated system that provides access to the Argus database – a curated system-of-record for site details and documents. The solution includes an ETL process that warehouses the Argus data and incorporates it with History Colorado curated GIS data. This secure data warehouse is specifically optimized for web display and efficient querying.

GCS developed a subscription based interface that integrates with History Colorado’s point of sale system. This integration allows users to easily apply for subscriptions, while administrators efficiently manage user access to the data and can respond to user requests. Additionally, GCS implemented a scheduled email notification system to promptly inform users about their subscription status and data request status, ensuring they stay informed and engaged.
