Montana Control Point Database: A Geodetic Solution

Montana Control Point Database (MCPD) Application Development by GCS

GCS proudly developed the Montana Control Point Database (MCPD) application in collaboration with the Montana Geodetic Control Working Group. This innovative application serves two primary objectives:

  1. Support for Montana Land Surveyors: The MCPD provides Montana’s land surveyors with a reliable platform to store and manage geodetic and mapping points that are not included in the National Geodetic Survey’s (NGS) database.
  2. Public Access to Geodetic Information: The application ensures that the public has free access to accurate and up-to-date geodetic and mapping control data.

Key Features of the MCPD

  • User-Friendly Interface: The MCPD application features a public viewer that allows users to easily search and download survey and mapping control points.
  • Secure Data Loader: A separate data loader component is secured by a login system, designed for use by licensed surveyors. Surveyors can upload their point data, which is then reviewed and verified by qualified technicians before being incorporated into the public dataset.

Enhanced Functionality

For added convenience, GCS has integrated the Geographic Coordinate Database (GCDB) from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management into the application, along with direct links to National Geodetic Survey (NGS) control point datasheets. This ensures users have comprehensive access to relevant geospatial data.

Technology Stack

GCS utilized advanced technologies, including ESRI ArcGIS Enterprise, StreetView, and Microsoft technologies, to ensure the MCPD application is both scalable and efficient.

By leveraging these cutting-edge tools, GCS has created a robust system that enhances the capabilities of land surveyors while providing valuable resources to the public.

About the Montana Control Point Database (MCPD)

The MCPD offers accurate horizontal and vertical positioning for land survey monuments, serving as essential control points for various applications. These data points are vital for the alignment of Administrative Boundaries and the Cadastral Framework, ensuring that land surveys and mapping activities maintain high accuracy and reliability.

By utilizing the MCPD, land surveyors and geospatial professionals can access up-to-date control data, enhancing the quality of their work and supporting effective land management practices across Montana.
