On November 22 and 23, 2019, the Future of Forestry & Agriculture Hackathon took place, a dynamic 24-hour competition aimed at generating innovative projects for the forestry and agriculture sectors that are vital to our rural economy. This hackathon brought together developers, entrepreneurs, and industry experts to collaborate and create cutting-edge solutions that address the unique challenges faced by these essential industries.

Background on the Future of Forestry Hackathon
The forest economy plays a crucial role in New England, particularly in Vermont, where 75% of the land is forested. Despite this significance, the forestry industry has been slow to adopt technology that could enhance operational efficiency and decision-making processes. Currently, Vermont has approximately 2.5 million acres enrolled in land use programs, with an average parcel size of 63 acres, resulting in about 40,000 active forestry management plans.
However, Vermont faces a significant challenge due to a limited number of foresters available to review and enforce these plans. This shortage makes it increasingly difficult to effectively manage and administer the state’s extensive forested lands.
Compounding this issue, existing information systems in the forestry sector often lack the necessary tools to facilitate real-time decision-making that could improve supply chain efficiency. A common bottleneck across all forestry value chains is the inadequate availability of information regarding raw materials. This includes essential data on standing timber slated for harvest, logs, low-grade wood, lumber, and other forestry materials.
By addressing these challenges, the Future of Forestry Hackathon aims to generate innovative technological solutions that can transform the forestry industry, enhance land management practices, and ultimately strengthen the rural economy.
The Hack: Enhancing Forestry Data Management
The challenge of the Future of Forestry Hackathon is to develop innovative solutions that improve the efficiency of collecting, aggregating, and managing forestry data, both in the field and the office. Participants are encouraged to create applications and tools that streamline data collection processes, facilitate real-time data aggregation, and enhance overall data management practices within the forestry industry. By leveraging technology to optimize forestry operations, we can support sustainable practices and drive productivity in this vital sector.
