The Role of GCS in Geospatial Watermarking
GCS participated in a pivotal project with GeoEye, focusing on watermarking large raster data resources for the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA). Utilizing GCS’s innovative GeoMarc® geospatial watermarking tools, the project involved both stand-alone server products and an extension for ESRI ArcGIS.

Key Features of the Watermarking Process
- Large-Scale Watermarking
The project successfully watermarked extensive volumes of satellite imagery, which were then mosaicked to create larger scenes. - Testing and Validation
To test the watermarking process, the mosaics were scanned for unique watermarks using our ArcGIS Extension. The resulting data was mapped out and displayed using thematic color maps, demonstrating the efficiency of our watermarking technology. - Image Metadata Recovery
The project highlighted that imagery metadata and lineage of a source image could be retrieved through digital watermarking, even after the image was altered or combined with numerous other images into a comprehensive country-wide mosaic.

Advantages of Geospatial Digital Watermarking
- Unique Identification: Our watermarking creates a unique “barcode” within image pixels for precise identification.
- Imperceptible Alteration: The watermarking process involves imperceptible alterations that allow for data storage without compromising image quality.
- Redundant Algorithms: Designed for robust data recovery, our algorithms can retrieve information even after significant image modifications such as rotation, scaling, compression, and cropping.
- Seamless Distribution: The technology supports orthomosaic creation and effective distribution across the internet.

Inherent Functions of GeoMarc® Tools
- Reliable Imagery Tracking: Ensures consistent imagery identity, linking, and tracking.
- User Association: Associates specific users with particular pixels, enhancing accountability and data integrity.
- Facilitated Data Exchange: Promotes the easy exchange of geospatial intelligence among stakeholders.
Geospatial Applications
- Thematic Visualization: Enables thematic displays of barcode characteristics, including time, location, ownership, permissions, and areas of interest.
