IDEAS Smart Engine: Revolutionizing Geospatial Data and Model Delivery
The IDEAS Smart Engine seamlessly connects users to products, along with the underlying geospatial models and data required to create those products, through a powerful and intuitive web interface. Originally part of Lockheed Martin Corp., the SI Organization has rebranded itself as Vencore, marking a new chapter in their commitment to innovative technology solutions.

Problem: Need for Advanced Geospatial Cloud Architecture
In the fall of 2010, the SI Organization approached GCS to discuss the development of a highly customized, high-performance cloud architecture designed for a global geospatial marketplace. The SI aimed to deliver complex problem-solving services on demand, with the capability to support rapid application development for a diverse array of public and private sector clients. This challenge called for a cutting-edge solution to effectively address the delivery, monetization, and productization of global information systems.
Solution: The Intelligent Data Exploitation and Analytics System (IDEAS)
GCS conceptualized and delivered the IDEAS (Intelligent Data Exploitation and Analytics System) platform. The IDEAS Smart Engine provides users with direct access to products and the geospatial models and data that drive them, all through an intuitive web interface. The development of the IDEAS prototype commenced in March 2012, utilizing a robust combination of technologies.
Advanced Technology Integration
The GCS team identified, integrated, and implemented technologies from Microsoft, IBM, and Esri, alongside custom GCS code for database management, middleware, and advanced user interface design. This innovative approach ensured the IDEAS platform was built on a foundation of complex algorithm development and web services delivery, tailored to meet the specific requirements of the SI Organization.
Successful Implementation and Future Phases
On October 31, 2012, the IDEAS system was activated, successfully demonstrating to clients the vision and concept of integrating advanced IT with geospatial big data. This validation highlighted the system’s value to stakeholders and its potential to transform geospatial data accessibility and usage.
Following this success, GCS began scoping and working on the next phase of the IDEAS project in January 2013, aimed at advancing the system beyond the proof-of-concept stage and into full-scale deployment.
Conclusion
The IDEAS Smart Engine represents a significant advancement in geospatial data integration, enabling organizations to harness the power of intelligent data exploitation and analytics. GCS remains committed to delivering innovative solutions that drive efficiency and enhance decision-making in the geospatial landscape.
